Overclocked xeon

Thanks to this Liquid cooling, I think I could overclock the xeon to a better clock than its base 3.4 Ghz. I was able to get the CPU to post and boot into windows at 4.6GHz with 1.3v. I ran a test for about 10 minutes and temps were under 65 on my cooler. The first thing to remember about dropping a 2P processor in a desktop platform is that not every motherboard recognizes Xeon CPUs. Asus’ Rampage III Formula does (the company says it tries to give all of its relevant RoG platforms this capability).

I bought the Intel Xeon 1230v3. I wanted some powerful and reliable CPU which i would use in rendering videos or just playing the newer games which i own, for example BF3.

The X58 has been shadowed for some time now, but the platform is still viable. I thought I’d make this topic for X58 users who are running Xeons.

As the CPU multiplier on all Xeons is locked upwards, the only way to overclock these CPUs is by increasing the QPI frequency above its stock 133MHz. However, overclocking a dual-processor motherboard is far more complex than a single socket board. I realize that the Xeon is insanely expensive compared to the i7, but in this case, I do this for a living and money is not an issue. I just want to make sure that I'm getting the best bang for my buck, and no one can tell me if the extra 800 dollars is going to do me any good. With Intel dominating the server these days, its Xeon processor release dates are arguably the dominant component of the overall server cycle. But even taking this into account, there is a steady beat of demand for more computing in the datacenters of the world that keeps servers flying off manufacturing lines and into glass houses at a reasonably steady pace, and this is what really drives the Xeon business.

P 2670 will be faster in multi-threaded tasks like rendering.Regarding Passmark (probably from cpubenchmark.SKU in the Xeon-E5 v3 range, the E5 2687W v3 flavor, is a 3.1 GHz 10-core part that actually uses the 12-core die where 2 cores (and their associated caches) were turned off.

According to their website, the tool can currently overclock Mac Pros and XServes with Intel Xeon processors. They use the example of taking a base model Mac Pro running at 2.8 GHz and getting it to run faster than Apple's top of the line 3.2 GHz machines.
