Barbera wine profile

Barbera grapes produce rich, red wines with strong fruit flavors and aromas, especially black cherry. Other characteristics of wines made with Barbera grapes include low, mild tannins and high acidity which produces a crisp taste. Again, the low tannins and high acidity of Barbera make it a flexible wine that goes well with multiple types of food. We especially like it paired with tomato dishes, like pizzas and pastas, as the acidity of the wine matches that of the tomatoes.

Barolo and Barbaresco producers.In the Langhe region of the Piedmont, in northwestern Italy, barbera largely remains the little brother to nebbiolo, the grape of Barolo and Barbaresco. The use of oak for fermentation or maturation can have a pronounced influence of the flavor and profile of Barbera. Barrel-influenced Barberas tend to be rounder, richer with more plum and spice notes.

For all its baggage, Barbera makes great everyday wine, though only in the rarest of circumstances does it make great wine. This is not faint praise, and it’s fine with me. In 1985 LA SPINETTA made its first red wine, Barbera Cà di Pian. After this many great reds followed: In 1989 the Rivettis dedicated their red blend Pin to their father.

Jamie Lynn Vineyard Barbera from McManis Family Vineyards is bright, focused with Red Raspberry as the predominant fruit and medium ruby in color. . However, black fruit and Cherry are also found. Amarones are typically very big, rich wines with flavours of raisin, liquorice, tobacco and fig and go well with rich dishes like game and aged hard cheeses. Amarone can be drunk young, while still a ruby purple, but they also age magnificently to a dark garnet for thirty years or more. Barbera is very smooth, and the flavors of the nose develop across the palate with an explosive finish from the mid palate to the back of the mouth.
