Panera Bread Foundation opened its fifth non-profit community cafe – called Panera Cares – today in Boston. The cafe opening comes on the heels of four successful community cafe launches in St. For the past year, a Panera Bread store near Clayton, MO has operated without set prices. Instead, patrons are encouraged to pay what they want with a portion of their donation going towards charity. There are no prices on the menu and you might be seated with someone you don’t know. Customers pay the minimum donation or volunteer in some way to earn a voucher for a meal.
Clayton, Missouri, the rather posh suburb of St. Louis, with a population that peaks at 13,000, manages to sprinkle an impressive amount of culture and innovation across its 2.5 square miles of land.

Panera Bread Franchise Launches Pay-What-You-Can Model
Panera Bread has had success with its non-profit Panera Cares cafes, but the for-profit Panera Bread restaurants recently suspended a pay-what-you-wish offer on turkey chili, after a disappointing response from customers. The program, though self-sustaining, was mostly ignored by patrons.
Ron Shaich founded Panera Bread back in the 1980s. Since then, the fast-casual restaurant has exploded into a national chain with nearly 1,800 locations. Back in 2010, Panera Bread began using the PWYW model at its five Panera Cares locations, allowing customers to pay whatever they choose for every item on the menu. These nonprofit “community cafes” bring in about 70 percent of a traditional Panera store’s revenue, which the company uses to raise hunger awareness and implement job-training programs for needy populations.
